Luigi Mangione is NO modern-day Robin Hood

CBS Minnesota asked me to share legal and crisis analysis after Luigi Mangione was charged with second-degree murder in New York and a hundred thousand dollars had racked up from the public in a fund for his defense.

First, the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was a murder. There is no other term to use for it–no matter what you think of the victim or what you believe he represented. The United States has federal and state laws for murder. Each element of the crime is describable and lends itself to be proved or dis-proved. Those items are for a jury or judge to decide as this case makes its way through the courts. The fact that to date–Dec 15, 2024–$100K was raised from the public is troubling to say the least. Luigi Mangione deserves to tell his own story as to why these events came about, but he is not a Robin Hood for justice. Watch the entire segment here for more details about these points and why I give UnitedHealthGroup-the parent of UHC–a failing grade on crisis reaction.

In a snapshot, here are 3 nuggets to take from the state of things today:
1. Murder is wrong–no matter the victim
2. Luigi Mangione is NOT a modern-day Robin Hood
3. UHG messed up its PR and optics from Day 1
